Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Winnipeg Food Policy Working Group. We are an ad hoc committee of Winnipeggers who believe that food security is an important issue for the City of Winnipeg to address. We believe that the most important action our city could take to support food security is to establish a food policy council, which would advise and assist the city on an ongoing basis.
Why should our municipal government take action on food?
1. Economic and Community Economic Development
- Households spend 10-40% of income after taxes on food
- At least 1 in 8 jobs in Winnipeg are directly related to food or agriculture
2. Infrastructure and Transportation
- 1 in 5 car trips are to grocery stores
- How do those without vehicles get to grocery stores?
3. Health and Food Safety
- Local health agencies and food inspectors
4. Land Use Planning
- Is there a grocery store in your neighbourhood?
- Can you access community gardens in your neighbourhood?
5. Waste Management
- Food waste takes up 40% of landfill space
6. Social and Environmental Planning
- Healthy communities are socially equitable and environmentally sustainable.
